Toddler Wardrobe Challenges
Well, October came and went, I can say wholeheartedly that it’s by far my favorite month (isn’t it everyone’s)? The weather finally cools down, night time comes early, and the moon lights up the neighborhood for our usual evening strolls. (I live in Vegas so I am usually held hostage coerced into a life of maximizing the capabilities of our AC unit). October symbolizes upcoming holidays, scary movies, pumpkin everything, and Halloween of course!
This October was especially wonderful for me; my 2 year old is starting to understand the concept of HALLOWEEN! He calls everything that is scary such as ghosts, pumpkins, vampires, spiders, and witches “Halloween.” We found his costume in early October and it has become THE COSTUME ACQUISITION in our household. This kid has 7 costume changes per day from The Hulk to Captain America to Spider-Man. Here I am, waiting for him to wear all of these cute new winter clothes but he downright REFUSES!
If I even try to change him when he isn’t ready, a tantrum ensues, and my blood pressure heightens. When we go out in public, people usually smile and think it’s cute but some moms have asked me how long am I going to allow him to do this.
My answer?
UNTIL HE DOESN’T WANT TO ANYMORE! Here’s the thing….my baby is 2 years old once in his life and I know…well I think…he won’t want to wear costumes forever unless he wants to be one of those Transformers on the Las Vegas Strip whose past is more than likely checkered. For now I am going to let him express his individuality. When he is a teenager and wants to shave his head into a mohawk, I more than likely will allow it because again, I know (hope) that this phase won’t last forever. When his dad and I reflect on this age, I know we will smile to ourselves and I bet it will only feel like he went through this phase for 5 minutes.
In this moment, it is more important for my child to wear the costume than it is for me to NOT have him wear the costume.
Happy Holidays!
